Most garages fail the same way: the cars end up in the driveway because the floor is full. We fix that with cabinetry, not wire shelving. Tall lockers for the things you do not want to look at, a workbench with drawers where you actually use it, a slat wall for the bikes and the yard tools, and overhead racks for the bins that come down twice a year. What does custom garage storage involve?
We start by measuring the cars, because they are the largest things in the room and every door has to open with them parked. Then we inventory the rest: bikes, tools, coolers, holiday bins, mowers, golf bags, the things that have been on the floor since the move. Those become zones. Tall cabinets with doors for what should be hidden, open shelving for what you grab weekly, a workbench where the light and the outlet are, slat wall for anything that hangs, and overhead racks above the hood of the car for what comes down twice a year.
The cabinetry is built from moisture-resistant plywood or thermally fused laminate, with every edge sealed, and it hangs on a leveled ledger a few inches off the slab so a wet floor or a hose never touches it. Overhead racks bolt through to the ceiling joists, not the drywall, and are rated for the load you actually plan to put up there. A workbench top is set at a height that fits the person who uses it, with drawers below and a power strip along the back. It is the same joinery and hardware we use inside the house, chosen for a room that is neither heated nor cooled.
What drives the cost of garage storage?
How many linear feet of wall you want covered, and what covers it. Slat wall and open shelving are the most economical; enclosed cabinets with doors and drawers cost more because each door and drawer adds material, hinges, slides and shop time. Material choice follows: laminate boxes are the practical standard for a garage, plywood with painted hardwood doors is the choice when the garage is a mudroom entrance and needs to look like the rest of the house. A workbench with a butcher-block or steel top and a full drawer stack is its own line item.
Overhead racks depend on how many and what they have to carry, since heavier loads mean heavier steel and more anchors into framing. A dedicated circuit for the bench, lighting under the cabinets or a floor coating done before the cabinets go in bring in other trades. A garage slab in a new Mt. Juliet or Murfreesboro build usually slopes toward the door, and older garages sometimes slope in surprising directions, so leveling is part of the plan either way. How long does garage storage take, and what is the process?
The consultation happens in the garage with the cars in it, because that is the only honest way to plan the space. From there we draw a plan and elevations that show every cabinet, rack and bench in relation to the car footprints and door swings, with a finish sample and a price. Once you approve, the cabinetry is built in the shop, and build time depends on how much of it is doors and drawers and whether the doors are painted hardwood or laminate. We give you a firm date at sign-off.
Installation runs one to two days for most garages. We ask that the garage be cleared to the walls the night before, and if you are planning an epoxy or polyaspartic floor coating, that goes in first and cures before we set a single cabinet. Cabinets hang on a leveled ledger, overhead racks are anchored to joists, the slat wall and bench go in last, and we help you decide what goes where before we leave. The cars go back in the same evening.
What makes garage storage last in Middle Tennessee?
A garage here sees summer heat, winter cold and humidity that swings between them, none of it conditioned. Particleboard swells, wire shelving rusts, and cheap doors warp. We build with moisture-resistant plywood or laminate, seal every edge, keep the cabinetry off the slab and leave an air gap behind it so nothing wicks moisture from the wall. Hardware is rated for the load, so a drawer of hand tools runs as smoothly in year ten as on day one. Overhead racks are steel, powder-coated and bolted into framing, so they never depend on drywall.
Good garage storage is also planned for how you actually use the room. The things you touch weekly are at hand height and in the open; the things you touch twice a year are overhead; anything a child should not reach is behind a locking door. Bins are sized to the shelves so no space is wasted, and shelves adjust as the family changes. The approach is the same as inside the house: build it so it does not need us, and come back to adjust it if it ever does.

Garage storage cost depends on how many feet of wall you cover, whether it is open shelving and slat wall or enclosed cabinets with doors and drawers, the materials, and whether it includes a workbench, overhead racks or electrical work. Are garage cabinets worth it?
Garage cabinets are worth it when the floor is full and the cars are outside. Enclosed cabinets hide the clutter, keep dust and pests off what is inside, protect chemicals from children and hold up to heat and humidity in a way that wire shelving and plastic bins do not. They also make the garage usable as a mudroom entrance, which is the door most Nashville families actually use.
Is overhead garage storage worth it?
Overhead garage storage is worth it for things you use a few times a year: holiday decorations, camping gear, coolers, luggage. Racks above the hood of the car use otherwise empty space and free the walls for what you reach for weekly. They have to be bolted into ceiling joists and rated for the load, so we size and anchor them rather than hanging a kit from drywall.
How long does it take to install garage storage?
Installing garage storage usually takes one to two days once the cabinetry is built. The garage is cleared the night before, cabinets hang on a leveled ledger, overhead racks anchor to the joists, and the slat wall and workbench finish the job. If you are coating the floor, that happens first and cures before we set cabinets. The shop build precedes installation, and we give a firm schedule at sign-off.
Is it OK to store books in a garage?
Storing books in a garage is not ideal in Middle Tennessee, because humidity swings warp pages and invite mildew. If you must, keep them in closed cabinets off the slab, in sealed bins, away from exterior walls. The same goes for photos, fabric and instruments. A garage storage plan should put paper and cloth items inside the house and give the garage what belongs there: tools, gear and bins.
Are garage cabinets better than shelving?
Garage cabinets are better than open shelving for anything you want hidden, kept clean or locked away; open shelving and slat wall are better for things you grab often and want to see. Most garages work best with both: closed cabinets along one wall, open storage where the bikes and tools live. Either way, plywood or laminate on a leveled ledger outlasts wire racks and plastic units.
