Belle Meade is its own city inside Davidson County, a little over three square miles laid out on the old Belle Meade Plantation land west of Nashville. The wide median of Belle Meade Boulevard runs from Harding Pike down toward Percy Warner Park, and the streets off it, Jackson Boulevard, Lynnwood Boulevard, Chickering Road and Page Road, hold Georgian, Colonial Revival and Tudor houses from the 1920s through the 1950s on lots that often run past an acre. Closer to Harding Pike the lots tighten up and the houses are brick ranches from the postwar years, many of them now being expanded or rebuilt.

Owners here tend to commission work that respects a house with a history: a kitchen reworked inside original walls, a paneled library, a dressing room built out from two small closets, a butler's pantry between kitchen and dining room. Blair Custom Interiors builds that kind of cabinetry in the shop and installs it about fifteen minutes from downtown Nashville by way of West End Avenue and Harding Pike.

What do Belle Meade homeowners usually ask us for?

Kitchens come first, and in Belle Meade that usually means a kitchen inside an older house that was never planned around one. Ceilings are tall, windows sit where the 1930s architect put them, and the room often connects to a butler's pantry, a back stair or a breakfast room. The cabinetry has to be drawn to those fixed points: inset doors, furniture-style end panels, a hood that lines up with a window head, and tall pantry cabinets that reach a ten-foot ceiling without looking stretched.

The second request is storage that matches the scale of the bedrooms. Estate houses were built with small closets, so owners convert a spare bedroom into a dressing room with an island, hanging sections at two heights and drawers for folded clothes. Paneled libraries and home offices come up often, as do media walls in family rooms that were added onto the back of the house in the 1980s or 1990s and never received built-ins.

What is different about working on a home in Belle Meade?

Belle Meade runs its own building department and its own permitting, separate from Metro Nashville, so a project that moves walls or adds square footage is reviewed under the city's code rather than Nashville's. Older houses also carry surprises behind the plaster: uneven framing, chases, radiators and the occasional original millwork worth keeping. We measure every wall and ceiling before anything is cut, build the cabinetry to those numbers, and scribe to the house on install day so the new work reads as if it had always been there.

Belle Meade questions

Every question we get

Do you work on historic homes in Belle Meade?

Yes. Much of Belle Meade dates from the 1920s through the 1950s, and that is the kind of house our cabinetry is drawn for: inset doors, proportions taken from the existing trim, and finishes chosen against the original floors and woodwork. We measure the actual room, then build to it rather than to a catalog size.

Can you add a walk-in closet to an older Belle Meade house that only has small closets?

Usually, yes. The most common approach is to convert a small adjoining bedroom or a run of two closets into a dressing room with built-in hanging, drawers and shelving, which keeps the primary bedroom itself intact. During the in-home consultation we look at the framing, the doors and the windows to find the plan that fits.

Do you handle the permits for a Belle Meade kitchen remodel?

Where a project needs a permit, we coordinate the drawings and the application with the City of Belle Meade, which handles its own permitting apart from Metro Nashville. Cabinetry alone typically does not need one; moving walls, plumbing or electrical does. We tell you which category your project falls in before work begins.
